The Native American Indian Movement (N.A.I.M.) was created in 1999 to "protect our burials from being desecrated," said Chief Carl TwoFeathers Whitaker, spokesman for the group, “to educate our young in the schools we’re an educational group. We listen to our elders and we do things in a good way. We're involved in the community." Whitaker said that they didn't want to just be a protest group. They want to deal strictly with people who are involved with any archaeological Native American remains/artifacts. "We are inter-tribal," Whitaker said. "We have support groups as far away as California; we have them in Connecticut, in Rhode Island. If we ever held a large gathering, most of our supporters would come from out of State. We do have those groups in the area here."

He said that N.A.I.M. was established for a good purpose. "We try to create with the community government and state government good public relations, not hostile. Currently we have good relationships."
